Case Study UEFA EURO 2024™ in Gelsenkirchen

Enhancing press conference accessibility for international journalists. How Gelsenkirchen and its police department used VIDEO.TAXI’s Live Translation to improve communication.

Organization

Gelsenkirchen is a diverse city located in the heart of the Ruhr area and one of the host cities for UEFA EURO 2024™, where several matches will be played. UEFA EURO 2024™ is one of the most prestigious international football tournaments, held every four years and attracting teams and fans from all over Europe and beyond. The city of Gelsenkirchen and the local police play a crucial role in organizing and executing the games, ensuring the safety of spectators, and creating an enjoyable experience for fans.

Challenge

Providing real-time live translation during press conferences. This requires highly accurate technology, as there is no room for error. Precision is crucial to ensure high-quality translation into English, especially for international journalists who do not speak German.

Solution

Partnering with VIDEO.TAXI, Gelsenkirchen implemented live translation technology to make their press conferences accessible to an international audience. VIDEO.TAXI translated the kickoff press conference and subsequent events from German into English. International journalists could ask questions in English, and the press spokespeople, more comfortable speaking in German, could respond accurately. The German responses were translated into English in real time, allowing journalists to receive immediate English translations. This seamless live translation ensured smooth communication and significantly improved understanding.

Result

For the first time, press conferences held by the city of Gelsenkirchen and the Gelsenkirchen Police were live-translated and accessible to all. This milestone greatly enhanced communication and understanding during the tournament. The live translation played a crucial role in ensuring a successful event for international guests. Vivien Grünkemeier, Press Officer for the City of Gelsenkirchen, stated, “We wanted to increase the accessibility of our events to ensure everyone could be part of this special occasion. VIDEO.TAXI provided excellent support in achieving this.”

The experience was excellent, and the support was outstanding. It was easy to integrate and
manage."
